Greece is preparing a major crackdown on illegal gambling across both
online and land-based channels, according to reports by SBC News.
Greek Minister of Economy and Finance Kyriakos Pierrakakis is drafting new legislation aimed at significantly strengthening enforcement against unlicensed gambling activity. The bill is expected to be published in the first half of 2026.
Key measures under the proposed bill
- Up to 10 years in prison for organisers of illegal gambling operations
- Fines ranging from €50,000 to €100,000 for operators
- Financial penalties for players who are repeatedly caught gambling with unlicensed operators
Notably, the proposal extends enforcement beyond operators to include
player-side sanctions, a move that would place Greece among the stricter European jurisdictions in terms of illegal gambling deterrence.
