Dutch Regulator: 4 in 10 Young Players Sign Up at 18

The Dutch gambling regulator KSA found that young people become significantly more active in gambling immediately after turning 18, according to a report published by The Gamblest. The regulator analyzed 15,761 new active gambling accounts, finding that 33% belonged to players aged 18 to 24.

Within that age group, 41% of accounts belonged specifically to 18-year-old players. Of these, 38% registered within one month of turning 18, and 11% of all accounts held by 18-year-olds were created on their actual birthday. Online casino games proved the most popular choice among this group, selected by 72% of players, while betting accounted for 11%. In the first three months following registration, players averaged 4 active gambling days and placed an average of €111 in total wagers.

The findings point to a clear behavioral pattern in which legal age eligibility functions as a direct trigger for gambling account creation among young Dutch consumers, with a notable share registering on or near their 18th birthday specifically. The concentration of new sign-ups within this narrow window raises questions for regulators about whether current age-verification and marketing safeguards adequately account for this predictable surge in youth gambling activity immediately following the legal age threshold.
