James Whitfield

Online betting transaction activity in Mexico grew 431.75% during the 2026 football World Cup compared to the 2022 tournament, surpassing the previous tournament's figures by more than fivefold, according to data from fintech company STP cited by iGaming Today.

Mobile betting accounted for 63.9% of total wagers placed during the period. A separate study by Ipsos Mexico found that 40% of surveyed Mexicans are familiar with sports betting, and among that group, 34% had placed bets on football matches specifically. Central Mexico represented the largest regional share of the market at 41.3%. According to projections from Mordor Intelligence, Mexico's online gambling market is expected to grow from $790,000 in 2025 to $1.09 million by 2031, reflecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.6%. The share of players under age 25 is forecast to expand by an average of 16.7% annually, reaching 49.4% of the market by 2031.

The World Cup-driven surge underscores the tournament's significant role in accelerating betting adoption in Mexico, with mobile-first behavior and a rapidly growing young player base pointing to continued structural growth in the market well beyond the immediate tournament period.
