Over 5 Million Brazilians Lose Access to Legal Betting

More than 5 million people in Brazil have lost access to legal betting platforms due to government restrictions or voluntary self-exclusion, according to a report by G3 Newswire. This figure represents approximately 12.5% of the 40 million active players registered in Brazil's state Sigap system.
Of those affected, 3 million recipients of the Bolsa Família and BPC social welfare programs were blocked following a ruling by the Federal Supreme Court. An additional roughly 800,000 people had their access restricted due to participation in debt restructuring programs, while 1.2 million users voluntarily self-excluded through the government platform. Among those 1.2 million self-exclusion requests, nearly 67% opted for indefinite self-exclusion, and 20.6% of users cited a desire to protect their personal data as their reason for opting out.
The figures reflect the combined impact of Brazil's welfare-linked betting restrictions, debt-related access limits, and growing voluntary self-exclusion since the country's regulated betting market launched. The scale of affected users comes shortly after Brazil's Finance Ministry suspended operations at 14 betting sites, underscoring a period of intensified restriction and oversight across the country's licensed betting sector.
