Brazilian TV Networks, Clubs Lobby Against Betting Ban

Brazil's largest TV networks and football clubs are pressuring the government against a possible betting ban, warning it would only strengthen illegal operators.

Brazil's largest television networks and football organizations have intensified pressure on authorities over a possible ban on betting platforms, according to a report by iGaming Today. The companies fear losing advertising revenue, sponsorship contracts, and other commercial ties to the industry, and argue a ban could strengthen illegal operators' position rather than reduce betting activity.

TV networks Globo, SBT, and Band all have partnerships with betting brands, including BetMGM, Bet do Milhão, and BandBet, and their representatives are advocating for preserving the regulated market. Owners of some TV-affiliated stations who sit in Congress may challenge restrictions by citing the Constitution.

Football clubs and federations have also opposed the ban. On September 17, they presented a manifesto titled "The End of Brazilian Football," warning of potential problems with sponsorship contracts, funding, and investment in the sport. The main argument against a ban centers on illegal betting growth: opponents argue that eliminating the regulated market wouldn't reduce demand but would push players toward unlicensed platforms. Clubs also warn of financial difficulties, including potential bankruptcy, and uncertainty surrounding existing contracts.
