Major League Balatro Enters Fourth Competitive Season
James Whitfield

The fourth season of Major League Balatro, a competitive league built around the poker-hand-based roguelike game Balatro, is currently underway, according to the league's official website. The season features 24 content creators competing in matches run through an unofficial mod called Balatro Multiplayer, which adds head-to-head networked play to the game. In each match, two opponents play identical hands, each starting with four lives; a lost round costs one life, and the player who runs out of lives first loses the match.
Players are divided into two conferences and four divisions, with each competitor playing one match per week. The regular season runs for eight weeks, after which 16 players advance to the playoffs, with the final scheduled for October. The league is organized by a figure known online as Zaino, who both runs the tournament and competes in it as a player. The league's website explicitly states the project has no affiliation with Balatro creator LocalThunk or publisher Playstack. Europe's PEGI rating board assigned Balatro an 18+ rating in December 2024 due to its depiction of gambling elements, though the rating was later lowered to 12+ following an appeal. The league currently has no sponsors from the gambling industry, with its current season instead backed by a ceramics workshop and a wooden countertop manufacturer.
