South Korea Detains 9 in $187M Illegal iGaming Network

South Korean cyber police in Gyeongnam Province detained nine people accused of running 153 illegal iGaming sites with combined revenue exceeding $187 million.

Cyber police in South Korea's Gyeongnam Province detained nine people connected to organizing and administering 153 unnamed illegal iGaming sites, according to a report by Kyunghyang Shinmun. Seven of the suspects worked for a company that supplied operators with ready-made platform solutions integrated with live streams from overseas online casinos, while the remaining two purchased and resold betting balance in bulk to operators. The group's combined revenue exceeded $187 million.

Three members of the group were formally arrested, including the company's CEO, while six others were referred to prosecutors without pretrial detention. As part of the investigation, police blocked 22 websites and secured a preliminary seizure order for approximately $690,000 in illicit proceeds. Beyond those detained, police issued international wanted notices through Interpol's red notice system for two additional accomplices believed to have fled abroad.

The case highlights the role of specialized technical infrastructure providers, rather than just front-facing operators, in sustaining South Korea's illegal online gambling ecosystem, with the group's revenue scale underscoring how supplying platform and streaming infrastructure to multiple operators can generate substantial illicit income independent of directly running individual gambling sites.
