UK Black Market Betting May Hit £800M This PL Season

Illegal bookmakers in the UK could take in approximately £800 million in bets across the entire 2026/27 Premier League season, according to an estimate from the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) cited by G3 Newswire.

The BGC projects that unlicensed operators could take around £20 million in bets during the season's opening weekend alone, with average weekly volumes across licensed matchdays reaching £15-20 million. The council expects the figure to grow by a further £200 million next season, reaching approximately £1 billion annually. The BGC linked the anticipated increase partly to a planned rise in betting duty scheduled for April 2027, which is expected to push more bettors toward unlicensed alternatives. Separate data from the World Advertising Research Center (WARC) indicates the illegal sector already accounts for nearly 50% of gambling advertising spend in the UK, while H2 Gambling Capital forecasts unlicensed betting volume growing from £17 billion in 2025 to more than £33 billion by 2028.

The projections point to accelerating growth in the UK's illegal betting market even as regulators intensify enforcement efforts, with rising taxation on licensed operators cited as a contributing factor pushing bettors toward unregulated platforms. The scale of projected growth suggests the black market could increasingly rival licensed operators in overall betting volume within the coming years absent stronger countermeasures.
