São Paulo Football Federation Warns of Betting Rule Changes

Brazil's São Paulo Football Federation warned that potential stricter betting regulations could devastate club finances, citing sports betting as a key revenue source for Brazilian football.

Brazil's São Paulo State Football Federation (FPF) published a statement titled "The End of Brazilian Football" on September 17, amid rumors of a sharp tightening of betting industry regulation, according to the federation's website.

According to FPF, investments from licensed operators have become one of the main revenue sources for the sport in Brazil, helping propel Brazilian clubs to leading positions in continental tournaments. The federation noted that operator investments benefit not only top clubs but also lower-division teams and clubs in smaller cities, warning that a sharp drop in revenue would first affect training centers, social programs, women's football, and youth academies. FPF argued that regulation is precisely what allowed Brazil to move away from being a global leader in match-fixing, and that damage to the legal betting market would push players toward unlicensed operators instead. The statement also emphasized that clubs' contracts and long-term plans were built around rules established by the government itself.

The federation's statement reflects growing concern within Brazilian football over the financial stability of clubs, particularly smaller ones, should regulatory changes significantly reduce betting industry investment in the sport.
