HBO Orders Card-Counting Drama Series Advantage Player

HBO will produce a series titled Advantage Player, based on the memoirs of American Gina Fiore, who spent 24 years earning a living by counting cards at blackjack tables in casinos worldwide, according to a report by Deadline. Fiore's methods did not violate U.S. law, but according to her account, she and the team of counters she assembled repeatedly faced pursuit, physical confrontations, and detentions by casino staff and police.

Fiore's memoir will not be published until October, though HBO ordered the series adaptation ahead of the book's release. Riley Keough, star of Daisy Jones & The Six, will play the lead role. According to the official series description, the central character discovers a method to consistently beat casinos and becomes part of a community of players who believe the only way to beat the system is to outplay the people who built it.

Will Graham, who worked with Keough on Daisy Jones & The Six and earned an Emmy nomination alongside her for that project, will serve as writer and showrunner for Advantage Player. Keough, Graham, and Fiore herself will serve as executive producers on the series. No premiere date has been announced. The project reflects continued industry interest in gambling-adjacent true stories, following a broader trend of streaming platforms adapting real-life accounts of players who found legal methods to gain an edge over casino operators.
