Netherlands: KSA Publishes Open Gambling Risk Detection Model
Marcus Delacroix

Researchers from the University of Amsterdam published an open-access gambling addiction risk assessment model on the website of Dutch regulator KSA, trained on betting data from 13 unnamed iGaming operators active in the Dutch market between July 30, 2023, and July 30, 2025.
The model covers all online gambling verticals and uses a machine learning algorithm to assign players a risk score based on betting patterns, frequency and duration of play, winning and losing streaks, and how players react to them. Researchers obtained the underlying data by submitting requests to operators under a Dutch legal provision that requires companies to share user data for independent research purposes. The model is publicly available for review and further development by any interested party.
The publication gives KSA a tool to compare its own risk assessments against those generated internally by operators, potentially strengthening oversight of how effectively individual companies identify at-risk players. By making the model openly accessible rather than proprietary, the initiative could establish a shared, verifiable standard for risk detection across the Dutch market, reducing reliance on each operator's internal, non-transparent risk models and giving regulators an independent benchmark to assess industry compliance with player protection requirements.
