TikTok Shop Diamond Auctions Draw Gambling Comparisons

Michael Ashworth

Live diamond auctions on TikTok Shop, featuring gambling-like mechanics, are gaining popularity on the platform, according to a report by Rolling Stone. Independent sellers on the social media platform's built-in marketplace list gemstones for bidding during live streams, where bids start at $1 under platform rules, and the countdown timer extends whenever a bid is placed in the final seconds. Most diamonds listed are lab-grown and priced between $100 and $500, with the format reportedly encouraging impulsive purchasing behavior.

Participants interviewed by Rolling Stone compared the bidding format to gambling, describing an unexpected win on a deliberately low bid as producing a feeling similar to a major payout. One participant reportedly purchased around 50 stones within a single month, while five others said they bought their first diamond unintentionally, either by placing a bid in error or unexpectedly winning an auction they had not seriously pursued. A comment from one buyer describing an inability to stop purchasing went viral on TikTok, drawing more than a thousand similar accounts in the comments section.

The trend illustrates how gambling-adjacent mechanics, including live countdown extensions and low starting bids, are increasingly appearing in e-commerce formats outside traditional gambling platforms, raising questions about consumer protection in social commerce spaces that operate without the regulatory oversight typically applied to licensed betting products.
