Binance Estimates $6.3 Billion Impact From Security Breach, Pledges to Cover Losses
Binance has suspended deposits and withdrawals after a security incident involving unauthorised transactions, with approximately $3 billion in affected assets frozen on-chain.

Binance has estimated the impact of a security incident at approximately $6.3 billion and pledged to cover all losses through its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and company funds.
In an October 30 update, the exchange said it had worked with blockchain partners to freeze approximately $3 billion in affected assets on-chain. Deposits and withdrawals were temporarily suspended while security checks continued.
Initial Findings Point to Compromised Employee Laptop
According to Binance’s preliminary investigation, an attacker may have compromised a DevOps engineer’s laptop, gaining access to a service container and submitting unauthorised withdrawal transactions.
The exchange said it had found no evidence that wallet private keys had leaked. It described the findings as preliminary and promised a detailed technical report once the investigation was complete and the facts had been verified.
Binance also revoked the affected address authorisation and engaged law enforcement agencies and blockchain intelligence partners to trace and recover assets.
The $6.3 billion figure is the company’s estimate of the incident’s total impact. The ultimate financial loss will depend partly on how much can be recovered; frozen assets should not be treated as funds already returned to the exchange.
Tether and Circle Freeze Stablecoins
Binance founder and former chief executive Changpeng Zhao said the incident appeared to be a hack. He noted that he no longer manages the exchange but expected users to be fully covered.
Zhao initially thanked Tether and Circle for freezing approximately $971 million and $823 million respectively. Subsequent figures increased: Reuters reported that Tether had frozen nearly $1.57 billion, while Circle had frozen more than $800 million. These issuer-level amounts form part of the wider asset-freezing effort and should not be added to Binance’s approximately $3 billion total.
Exchange Promises Updated Reserve Disclosure
Binance said customers would not bear the losses and that it would publish an updated Proof of Reserves after completing remediation.
The announcement did not provide a timetable for restoring deposits and withdrawals or completing the investigation. Its compensation commitment combines SAFU resources with company funds, rather than relying on the protection fund alone.
