Chile Orders Blocking of 37 More Online Gambling Domains

Chile's telecommunications regulator Subtel has ordered internet providers to block 37 additional domains, subdomains and mirror sites associated with online gambling platforms operating without legal authorisation in the country.

The September 21 order was sent to Entel, Movistar, Claro, GTD, WOM and VTR. The providers have a maximum of 48 hours from notification to implement the blocks through the Domain Name System, or DNS.

The latest list includes resources associated with 1xBet, Marathonbet, Betano, bet365, Betway, Betsson, Rojabet, Estelarbet, Betcris, KTO, Juega en Línea Chile, Betfair, Betsala, Mi Casino and Sportingbet.

SCJ Validates Domains Before Blocking

The blocking process follows decisions by Chile's Supreme Court and the Santiago Court of Appeals.

Under the procedure, Lotería de Concepción or another participating party identifies domains, redirects and mirror sites associated with unauthorised online gambling platforms and submits them to the Superintendencia de Casinos de Juego (SCJ).

The SCJ then verifies the domains before Subtel sends the approved list to the internet providers covered by the court proceedings.

Subtel said DNS blocking was selected because it provides a relatively targeted way to restrict specifically identified domains while reducing the risk of unintentionally blocking legitimate services.

Once the restrictions are implemented, providers must report compliance directly to the Santiago Court of Appeals and send Subtel a copy containing the exact date and time the block became effective.

Chile Is Extending Blocks to New Mirrors

The September action follows an earlier Subtel order issued on September 1 covering 42 gambling URLs.

That list included domains associated with Stake, 1xBet, Betsson, Betano, Betcris, BC.GAME, TonyBet, BetFury and a number of other brands.

The latest order shows how the blocking system is designed to address replacement domains and mirror sites rather than operate as a one-time blacklist.

Subtel said the procedure will continue to be applied to new domains, subdomains and mirrors when they can be specifically identified, verified and validated by the SCJ. The system also includes a process for correcting blocks if legitimate services are affected.

Online Gambling Remains Unauthorised in Chile

Chile's SCJ states that commercial online gambling platforms are not currently authorised under the country's gambling framework.

Gambling is generally prohibited unless specifically permitted by law, with existing authorisations covering entities including Polla Chilena de Beneficencia, Lotería de Concepción, horse racing and licensed land-based casinos. A legislative proposal to establish a regulated online betting framework remains under consideration.

Subtel's role in the current blocking process is primarily technical. The regulator previously said the underlying court ruling is directed at internet providers, while Subtel coordinates and communicates the technical measures required to implement it.

The successive September blocking orders indicate that Chilean authorities are using an ongoing domain-level enforcement process as offshore platforms introduce new URLs and mirrors.
