Denmark's August gambling market was dragged lower by a sharp sports betting decline, while online casino GGR increased 12.5% and remained the largest liberalised segment.

Denmark's gambling market recorded DKK678 million ($101.3 million) in gross gaming revenue in August 2026, with the regulator's GDP-adjusted figures showing a 7.1% decline from the same month last year.
The contraction was driven primarily by sports betting, where GGR fell 42.7% year on year to DKK132 million, approximately $19.7 million.
Online casino moved in the opposite direction. Revenue increased 12.5% to DKK415 million, approximately $60 million, making it the largest segment of Denmark's liberalised gambling market during August.
The figures were published by gambling regulator Spillemyndigheden.
Sports betting recorded by far the weakest performance among Denmark's major gambling verticals.
August GGR of DKK132 million was down 42.7% on a GDP-adjusted year-on-year basis.
The decline was large enough to outweigh growth in online casino and both of the reported land-based gambling categories.
The regulator's monthly statistics do not identify a specific cause for the fall or provide operator-level results, so the figures alone do not establish whether the contraction reflects changes in sporting schedules, betting margins, customer activity or other factors.
The result also contrasts sharply with the preceding months. Betting GGR had increased 68.6% year on year in June and 21.3% in July, illustrating the month-to-month volatility that can affect sportsbook revenue.
Online casino generated DKK415 million in August, up 12.5% from the corresponding period of 2025.
The vertical accounted for more than 60% of GGR across Denmark's liberalised market during the month.
Its growth partly offset the decline in sports betting but was not sufficient to prevent the overall market from contracting.
Online casino had already become Denmark's largest gambling category by annual GGR in 2025, when the segment overtook lotteries for the first time.
Land-based casinos generated approximately DKK34 million ($5.1 million), with the regulator reporting an 8.7% year-on-year increase after adjustment for GDP development.
Land-based bingo increased 6.4% to around DKK3 million, or approximately $450,000.
Gaming machines produced approximately DKK95 million ($14.2 million) in nominal GGR.
While that amount was broadly unchanged in nominal terms from a year earlier, Spillemyndigheden's GDP-adjusted comparison showed gaming machine revenue down 2.6%. The distinction reflects the regulator's newer methodology for comparing historical market figures at the current year's economic level.
August highlights an increasingly different performance between Denmark's two largest competitive online verticals.
Online casino continued to expand and accounted for the majority of liberalised market GGR, while sportsbook revenue contracted by more than two fifths.
For operators, the monthly figures show that growth in casino activity can provide some diversification when sportsbook results weaken, but the scale of August's betting decline was too large to be fully absorbed elsewhere in the market.
The data cover a single month, however, and do not establish a longer-term contraction in Danish betting. Subsequent monthly releases will show whether August represented a temporary fall or the beginning of a broader slowdown.
