Portugal’s gambling regulator Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos (SRIJ) has published draft amendments to the country’s online gambling legislation, proposing a formal regulatory framework for several gameplay mechanics widely used across iGaming.
If adopted, the changes would introduce uniform rules for all licensed operators and explicitly regulate:
Bonus buy features and bet modifiers in online casino games
Bet builders and cashout functionality in online sports betting, including the settlement of cancelled events at odds of 1.00
Key proposed restrictions
Under the draft rules:
Bonus buy features would be limited to a maximum cost of 4x the original stake and could be used no more than twice per session
Bet modifiers would allow players to increase their stake by up to 50% of the base bet, subject to:
a €10 maximum cap
activation for no more than four consecutive spins
For sports betting, the proposal would also standardise how cancelled events are settled, requiring operators to apply odds of 1.00 when calculating outcomes — a move aimed at eliminating inconsistencies across platforms.
Consultation timeline
SRIJ has opened a public consultation period of 20 working days, starting 27 January, allowing operators, suppliers, and stakeholders to submit feedback before the amendments are finalised.
