Buenos Aires Introduces 2% Levy on Online Slot Winnings

Authorities in Buenos Aires province began collecting a 2% levy on online slot winnings, according to a report by G3 Newswire. The levy applies to seven licensed platforms: Bet365, Betano, Betsson, BetWarrior, BPlay, Sportsbet, and Stake. Sports betting remains exempt from the measure.

The new levy is expected to generate up to $26.4 million per month for the provincial budget. The mechanism itself is not a new tax, as the province's legislation has permitted this type of levy since 2018. Players are considered the formal payers of the levy, with operators responsible for withholding the amount from winnings and remitting it to the provincial budget.

The introduction of the slot winnings levy coincides with intensified enforcement against Buenos Aires' illegal gambling market, following the province's recent blocking of 537 unlicensed websites. Together, the measures reflect a dual approach by provincial authorities aimed at both generating additional fiscal revenue from the licensed market and reducing the share of betting activity flowing to unregulated platforms.
