The indie game combines modified blackjack with deckbuilding, health-based combat and more than 300 cards, while offering no real-money gambling despite its casino-inspired mechanics.
Indie studio Purple Moss Collectors has built an unusual take on blackjack with Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers, a single-player roguelike deckbuilder published by Yogscast Games.
The game launched on Steam on August 8, 2024 and received a major 2.0 update on July 30, 2026.
Instead of wagering real money, players progress through a tavern by defeating a series of opponents in modified blackjack matches before eventually reaching the owner of the establishment.
The title was developed by Purple Moss Collectors founder Michael Davis and is priced at $14.99.
Blackjack Becomes a Health-Based Combat System
Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers keeps the familiar objective of reaching 21 without going over, but turns each hand into combat.
Both the player and opponent have health bars.
The loser of a hand takes damage equal to the difference between the two scores. If a player busts by exceeding 21, they instead take damage equal to the opponent's entire score.
Defeating an opponent rewards the player with chips that can be spent between encounters and gives them a choice of a new card to add to their deck.
If the player's health reaches zero, the run ends and progression starts again, following the familiar roguelike structure.
Decks Can Include Tarot Cards and Business Cards
The card pool extends far beyond a conventional blackjack deck.
More than 300 cards are available, including standard playing cards alongside tarot cards, postcards, business cards and other unusual additions.
Individual cards can introduce special effects that change how a hand develops.
Suits also define different strategic approaches. Hearts focus on recovering health, spades provide defensive effects, diamonds generate chips and clubs increase damage.
This allows players to build decks around specific combinations rather than treating every card only as its numerical blackjack value.
Tavern Includes 60 Opponents and Casino-Inspired Minigames
Players can encounter around 60 different opponents while progressing through the tavern.
Between blackjack battles, the game includes additional activities such as a slot machine and trading a fictional cryptocurrency whose price changes over time.
These systems use gambling and speculative finance themes as game mechanics, but there is no option to wager or withdraw real money.
The casino setting therefore functions as part of the game's theme and progression system rather than as a real-money gambling platform.
Version 2.0 Expanded the Game Significantly
The July 2026 version 2.0 update expanded the original release with four additional tavern floors.
It also introduced more than 50 talismans that provide persistent effects during a run, adding another layer to deck and build development.
A daily challenge mode was added as well, giving players a recurring set of conditions outside normal runs.
Purple Moss Collectors subsequently announced on September 17 that Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers is also being prepared for console release.
Taskmaster Helped Inspire the Core Idea
Davis has said the concept originated partly from the British comedy programme Taskmaster.
One challenge required contestants to remember the order of unusual cards in a deck, which inspired the idea of mixing familiar playing cards with unexpected objects and effects.
Davis then developed the project largely as a solo creator under the Purple Moss Collectors name.
The unusual combination found a sizeable audience after launch. According to publisher Yogscast Games, Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers generated more than $1 million in sales during its first month.
At the time of publication, the Steam version carried a "Very Positive" user rating based on more than 3,000 reviews.
The game sits at an interesting intersection between casino imagery and conventional indie game design. Its rules borrow heavily from blackjack, but progression, deck construction and combat move the experience closer to roguelike card games than traditional gambling.
