The affiliate certification body says Costa Rica-based BetOranje is actively targeting Dutch players with local language, payment methods and branding closely resembling the KNVB identity.
Dutch affiliate certification body Keurmerk Verantwoorde Affiliates has raised concerns about BetOranje, an online gambling operator without a Dutch licence that it says is actively targeting players in the Netherlands.
The Costa Rica-based operator uses an orange shield containing a white lion as its main brand mark, a design that closely resembles the visual identity of the Royal Dutch Football Association, KNVB.
KVA identified BetOranje while monitoring an unlicensed affiliate website that directed users to the casino through a tracking link.
The association said the operator's branding is only one of several elements indicating a deliberate focus on Dutch consumers.
BetOranje Uses Dutch Language and Local Payment Methods
According to KVA, BetOranje operates a fully Dutch-language website, including its terms and other legal information.
The site also displays payment options associated with the Dutch market, including iDEAL and major domestic banks such as ABN AMRO, ING, Rabobank and SNS.
KVA said its test registration process required relatively few steps and that it was able to reach the deposit process using a Google account.
The operator also promotes bonuses including a welcome package of up to €11,500 and 400 free spins, alongside reload offers and cashback promotions.
BetOranje does not appear on the Kansspelautoriteit's list of companies authorised to offer online gambling in the Netherlands.
Orange Lion Adds to Dutch Market Positioning
KVA highlighted the BetOranje name and visual identity as further signals of local targeting.
"Oranje" is closely associated with Dutch national identity and the country's football teams, while the operator's orange shield and white lion bear a strong visual resemblance to the KNVB emblem.
The KNVB itself uses an orange shield-style mark containing a white lion.
There is no indication that BetOranje has an official relationship with the football association, and KVA's findings do not by themselves establish a trademark infringement. No public legal action by the KNVB against the operator has been reported.
The similarity is nevertheless relevant from a gambling enforcement perspective because Dutch branding can contribute to the impression that a foreign operator is specifically addressing consumers in the Netherlands.
KVA Shared Findings With Dutch Authorities
KVA said it has passed information from its monitoring to the Kansspelautoriteit.
The organisation also shared relevant findings with payment companies and called on parties including the regulator, ING and Google to examine the services being used by the operator.
Dutch authorities assess multiple factors when determining whether an offshore gambling business is targeting the local market rather than merely being technically accessible from the Netherlands.
Language, locally familiar payment methods, Dutch-focused marketing and other market-specific characteristics can all form part of that assessment.
For KVA, BetOranje represents an example of how an unlicensed gambling business can build an offering that appears specifically designed for Dutch users despite operating from outside the country's regulated system.
