UAE Arrests Three South Koreans in $2.3 Billion Gambling Investigation

Two suspects have been returned to South Korea, while investigators link one alleged operation to BetEast, Swansea City’s shirt sponsor during the 2016/17 season.

Three South Korean suspects have been arrested in the United Arab Emirates in an investigation involving alleged illegal gambling operations that handled approximately KRW3.1 trillion ($2.3 billion) in bets.

South Korean authorities announced the arrests on October 14. Two suspects, an alleged deputy leader and a software developer, were returned through Incheon International Airport that day. Negotiations over the return of the suspected leader were continuing at the time of the announcement.

The combined figure covers two alleged gambling organisations. Investigators linked the larger operation to BetEast, a betting brand that sponsored Swansea City when the club competed in the English Premier League.

Investigation Covers Two Alleged Operations

The suspected leader and deputy are accused of operating illegal gambling websites handling approximately KRW2.6 trillion in bets from countries including the Philippines and Malaysia.

According to investigators, the pair fled South Korea in 2016 and subsequently used the UAE to evade law enforcement and launder criminal proceeds.

The third suspect, a software developer, was allegedly involved in a separate gambling organisation handling around KRW500 billion in bets. That organisation operated five illegal websites, and its suspected leader had already been returned from the UAE in July.

The KRW3.1 trillion total therefore represents the combined scale of the two operations under investigation. It describes betting activity rather than established operator revenue or profit.

BetEast Sponsored Swansea in 2016

Korea JoongAng Daily reported that the larger organisation advertised BetEast on Swansea City’s shirts and inside its stadium in 2016. South Korean authorities described the betting website as illegal under domestic law.

Swansea’s own announcement confirms that it signed BetEast as its front-of-shirt sponsor for the 2016/17 season. Published on June 2, 2016, the announcement described the agreement as the largest shirt sponsorship deal in the club’s history.

BetEast also became Swansea’s official Asian betting and gaming partner. Its logo appeared on adult shirts, while children’s shirts remained sponsor-free.

The announcement promoted international brand exposure as a central feature of the partnership. It also referred to a UK-facing website developed with TGP Europe, providing historical context for the brand’s presence in British football.

The current allegations concern the suspects’ gambling operations and associated financial activity. The sponsorship announcement establishes the commercial relationship between Swansea and BetEast.

Joint Operation Tracked Suspects to UAE

The arrests followed cooperation between UAE authorities and South Korea’s interagency task force, which includes the National Police Agency and National Intelligence Service.

Investigators shared information about the suspects’ locations and movements before UAE authorities carried out the arrests. The operation was codenamed Halak, an Arabic term meaning destruction.

South Korean authorities said their wider enforcement effort would target overseas gambling websites and money-laundering networks. The October 14 announcement confirmed the return of two suspects, with the alleged leader’s transfer still subject to discussions with the UAE.
